Race Report
We welcomed five new runners, Alfie Brunwin, Caroline Street, Sarah Dewbury, Rhomeo Antonio and Gareth Brearley to The Plough for the August race on a warm and humid morning. The new route is going down well. The runners enjoyed the challenge of the hills, the bliss of the shade over Tracy's Dell and the joy of the long gentle downhill stretch on the Middleway in the last kilometre.
New runners often underestimate their speed and so it was for Rhomeo and Gareth who finished in the top two places. Mr Handicap will sort that out next month. First home off a genuine handicap was Rebekah Searle who became our Most Improved Woman. Next was Ian Beveridge who was Most Improved Man. Alfie (accompanied by his Mum, Jo) was our Rising Star and was awarded a gold cup. Well done all!
Special mention goes to Mark Curtis who set a new course record. Well done! It is an interesting quirk of a handicap races that Mark set the new record without being the Most Improved Man. in fact, the faster you are the more difficult it is to win a trophy which is good news for steady runners.
Afterwards we enjoyed a convivial chat over coffee and bacon butties.
Thank you very much to Maggie Barber, Roger Bradley and Mike Dukes, Jen Mudle and Raymond Searle for marshalling, Andy Smith for doing the signs, Ian Beveridge and Mandy Goldsmith for pruning back overhanging nettles and brambles and to David Gould for processing the results. The race wouldn't work without such a great team of helpers. And another special mention, this time to visiting marshal Guy Lawrenson who helped us set up the first race way back in October 2006.
The next race is on Sunday, 8 September, the morning after the fete, starting at 9am at The Plough. New runners are always welcome and you don't have to be fast. It's a handicap race so everyone, whatever their pace, has a chance of winning.
