Absolutely flipping good Longparish run this morning. Thanks to Jeremy Barber, Maggie Barber and of course David Gould for organising this run every month. The handicap system works well and allows the slower runners to set off first and the quicker ones off, in order thereafter. This meant me getting away before Luke, Jim Dundas, Dennis and first timer James Rodwell. I tried, in vane, to pass David G and John H before the first kilometre but managed it before the second. I knew the other guys would have set off and be hunting for me :-P. I just kept my head up and eyes focused on my next victim. Sorry Frankie ;-). It took ages to catch him and the other runners were spread out quite far apart. All the time being aware of anyone who might be trying to pass me. As I'd pass a runner I'd listen out for how soon before they'd mention the next person coming by. This would give me an idea how far behind me they were and how long I'd have before I'd be caught. I heard someone closing in on me so if I was close to a sign or another runner I would speed up to get to that point before I was passed. This seems to work quite well at messing with their spirit or something as often they'd back off. The guy behind me, David Wearn, must've decided to hang back until the last few hundred metres. He came past just before the turn back into the cricket ground. Shame no-one got a picture. It must've been a sight? 4 or 5 grown men all within 1 second of each other sprinting for the finish line. David held me off whilst I somehow kept in front of Luke and Jim Dundas as we crossed the line and finished in a heap. Brilliant and slightly child like behaviour. Nothing you wouldn't expect of grown men :-P 9 seconds off my pb. Happy enough with that, for now anyway. 21:54 Going to be even tougher next month as the handicap system closes the gap between us all. Oh, oh.
It was a lovely sunny morning for the May run. We welcomed new runners Donna Bryan, Nick Lockhart, Elizabeth Gant and James Rodwell.
First home with a new personal record time was Laura Reynolds who was a Most Improved Woman. Lauren Beal was our Rising Star, also with a personal record, and David Wearn was Most Improved Man. Daniel Sanderson and Luke Pierce also set personal records.
Well done to everyone who ran or accompanied children or simply turned to cheer the runners on. Thanks go to Jim Dundas and Maggie Barber for refreshments, the Wearn family, Dennis Doney and Maggie for marshalling and time keeping, David Gould for the signs and the Cricket Club for the lovely venue.
Our next race is on Sunday 11th June starting at the usual time of 10am at the Cricket Ground. Everyone is welcome especially volunteers to help (full training provided). If you'd like to run it is a handicap race so people of all abilities have a chance to win.
