Race Report

Wrapped up warm before the start

Andy and Nina tear off at the start

The cold weather didn’t seem to put the hardy runners of Longparish and its environs off: there was a very good turnout for March’s race, including some new runners. We were delighted to welcome Rachel, Sonia, and Nina (accompanied by her dad, Andy) to the race for the first time. David acquired a new identity as William’s pusher.

Rachel and Sonia performed well to beat their estimated times; Nina was sent off much later than her estimate demanded1 but still managed to come inside the handicap time and hugely inside trial runs—an excellent effort. David and William were sent off at an entirely random time1, but the handicap next time will be spot on. Other notable performances include PBs from Justin and Glynne, who was celebrating his birthday in style.

The Most Improved Runners (with Sim standing discreetly in for Ben)

At the head of the competitors running off real handicaps came Jeanette and Chris who both scored massive PBs and became this month’s Most Improved Runners. First junior in was a charging Ben, so he is our Rising Star. Very well done to all!

Ben had to disappear before the trophies were awarded, so we arranged a substitute, Sim, to hold the trophy aloft in his stead1.

The Birthday Boy

Hot drinks — hurrah!

To mitigate the cold afterwards, there were coffee, tea, scrumptious birthday cake and flapjack—thanks to Sheila and Maggie for that. Thanks also to Maggie, Pauline, Katie and Jonathan for starting us off and clicking us in; to the Goulds and Sarah for scattering the signs round the course, to everyone else who mucked in and helped and, last but not least, to Longparish Cricket Club for letting us use the wonderful start & finish venue.

1 Mea culpa (thrice) — David G
