Race Report

What a miserable day! Worse for the spectators than the runners, February's run was wet and somewhat cool. Nevertheless, a field of 24 hardy souls turned out — the second–highest turnout to date (we had 25 in August 2008 when the field was boosted by some visiting Hardley Runners.

The L2SOTM is turning into something of a McNeice family outing, and we were pleased to welcome Colin’s grandson Callum and son Carl, who put in a very fast run off a pessimistic estimate.

Longparish won’t be outdone, and the Derrick family are also turning out in force — a big hello to Abigail (about whom, more later) and to local Carol Dunford who ran her first L2SOTM today.

To all new entrants: welcome! and well done! on outstripping your estimates.

Happy Birthday, Jack — 91 years young

As a pre–race warmup, a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday To You was sung by the massed choir of the L2SOTM in celebration of Jack’s 91st birthday. “If you run all your life,” he said, “you’ll live to an average age — but at least you’ll die fit!”

Awards

The Evanses kindly donated a prize for Unaccompanied Minor, and that was awarded to new youngster Abigail. The Most Improved Lady cup was secured by a personal–best run by Elizabeth Prince, returning after a gap of just over a year. A not–quite–personal–best (but close) for Dave Henery saw him win the Most Improved Man tankard.

Well done! to all of them, and a round of applause to everyone who turned out in the wet.

The best–laid schemes…

We were probably still hysterical after last night’s uproarious entertainment by Iestyn Edwards and there were one or two glitches with the timekeeping today. If your time (or, indeed, position) in the results above doesn’t match your own record, please let David know and he’ll try to sort it out.

And, last but not least, we are very grateful to…

Jim and Jack, who magicked up some scrummy post–race chocolate cake; Maggie, for the rest of the onsite catering and for working around our timekeeping foibles; Jack the Chief Marshal; to the Goulds and Katie for sorting out the signs; and to the Cricket Club for the use of the Ground and priceless (dry) Pavilion.
