Race Report

Sheila and Mike, September‘s Most Improved Runners

Continuing last month‘s cooling trend, the weather was good for running, albeit a little breezy in places. Of the 26 runners, exactly half beat their handicaps. We welcomed new runner Jemma Day and three new junior runners Billy Reynolds and Elizabeth & Freddie Brown, who were the first three finishers.

Since they were running off estimated times and we had no other junior runners, the Rising Star trophy wasn‘t awarded this month. Fourth in and scoring a Personal Best was our Most Improved Man, Mike Dukes. Two places behind was Sheila Evans, delivering her fastest time this year to become our Most Improved Woman.

There were a clutch of other great runs this month. Joining Mike on Personal Best times were Karl Gailer, Stewart Dewey, Camilla Janmohamed, Michelle Holmes and Kerry Starkey, Andover parkrun‘s first lady yesterday, also on a PB). Robert Bryan and Andy Smith both ran their best times of the year.

The Temporary Organisers Fiona, James and David managed to make it look slightly harder than usual, but mostly coped. There was a minor hiatus in the middle where it was discovered that one of the runners had ticked the right starting time under the wrong name. They¹, strangely, didn‘t respond to "their" call to start. Sorting that out delayed a few other runners: it hasn‘t affected the results and their run times are all correct. More excitement followed when it turned out that David hadn‘t ticked himself off on the list at all. He certainly got ticked off then.

Thanks to adults accompanying junior runners; to Angela, James and Jim for the scrummy refreshments; to Angela, Camilla, Fiona, Sarah, Nick and James for marshalling; to Andy for the signage; to David for massaging the numbers and to the Cricket Club for letting us use the lovely venue.

Our next race is on Sunday 14th October starting at the usual time of 10am at the Cricket Ground.

Everyone is welcome especially volunteers to help (full training provided). If you'd like to run it is a handicap race so people of all abilities have a chance to win.

¹ One day, someone will invent a set of gender-blind personal pronouns. For now, I‘m sticking with they etc.
